Oraciones de Causa y Efecto

Fondo

Aunque es posible que una de las causas para dar lugar a un efecto, las materias académicas rara vez son tan simples. Una causa puede dar lugar a más de un efecto, por ejemplo, las fuertes lluvias pueden causar deslizamientos de tierra e inundaciones. Además, más de una causa pueden llevar a uno o más efectos, por ejemplo, la pizza demasiado de comer y beber demasiado de coque para la comida puede causar a engordar y llegar tarde a clase!

There was flooding because of the heavy rain.

The flooding was caused by the heavy rain.

The heavy rain was the cause of the flooding.

The heavy rain was the reason for the flooding.

The flooding was attributed to the heavy rain.

There was flooding on account of the heavy rain.

Owing to the heavy rain there was flooding.

(These cause-effect phrases are all followed by noun phrases; i.e. 'the heavy rain'.)

... because

There was flooding because heavy rain fell all night.

('Because' is followed by a verb phrase, 'heavy rain fell all night'.)

Nota Gramática: No utilizamos "Because" como la primera palabra en una frase: es de mal gusto.
Hay una serie de alternativas. Usted puede utilizar:

- 'Owing to ...'; e.g. 'Owing to the heavy rain there was flooding.'
- 'As...'; e.g. 'As there was heavy rain, there was flooding.'

Nota Gramática:
verbos modales como 'may', 'could' y 'might' debe ser seguido por los verbos infinitivo, tales como «Have» y «Be».

Nota Gramática: usarán 'con adverbios que muestran una alta probabilidad, tales como 'undoubtedly', 'definitely' and 'probably'. Para otros adverbios, que muestran una menor posibilidad, utilice 'may', 'could' or 'might'; e.g. The rain could, perhaps, cause flooding.' o 'The rain may possibly cause flooding'.

Además, la posición del adverbio generalmente justo delante del verbo para los adverbios de posibilidad y probabilidad. Esto es porque el adverbio da más información sobre el verbo. Esto es diferente de adverbios como 'Unfortunately', que dan información acerca de toda la frase, por ejemplo, 'Unfortunately, the heavy rain caused flooding.'
